Birdseye
Studio GIS specializes in mapping applications that support land
use planning decisions. My Ph.D. Dissertation focused on GIS in
planning and natural resource management. In the course of my research
I spent a year as a GIS specialist at the San Francisco Planning
Department. My
GIS work has ranged from urban landuse analyses to urban interface
wildlife habitats.
I
have written and spoken extensively on the ways in which GIS brings
things into a social context and lies somewhere between describing
and defining the world. A key idea is that land use GIS is a process
of translating multiple prespectives into tangible spatial data.
But static maps are more effective when accompanied by other perspectives
such as images and narratives that provide a sense of the world
in motion and a sense of place. The process of GIS should
evoke these perspectives rather than tack them on as an afterthought.
